Jamie – .NET+, C++, SQL

Jamie is a Software Engineer and engineering lead with 25+ years of experience building developer tools, performance profilers, and data tooling in C++ and C#/.NET. Most of his career was at a global tech company. He led teams that built debugging, deployment, and profiling tools used by game studios on a major gaming console and on Windows, and earlier built database development tools for a leading IDE. He is equally comfortable as a hands-on architect or as a team manager. He puts heavy focus on testing and on tools that save other engineers’ time.

Experience Highlights

Principle Software Engineering Lead
May 2020 - Jun 20266 years
Project Overview

Game development tooling for a global tech company’s gaming division. It’s used by studios building games for a major game console and for Windows. Game developers needed faster ways to deploy, debug and profile their games across consoles, handhelds and PC, and to publish from popular engines with less manual work. Jamie led the team that owned this tooling end-to-end. They shipped remote deployment and debugging for handheld scenarios, a sampling memory profiler with capture comparison, Unity and Unreal integrations, and new IDE debugger support. The tools went out across multiple SDK, IDE gallery, NuGet and winget releases, and were localized for the Japanese market.

Responsibilities:
  • Led a team of up to nine engineers delivering debugging, deployment, profiling, and developer productivity tools for Xbox and Windows game developers across multiple game development kit, Visual Studio gallery, nuget, and winget releases.
  • Recruited, onboarded, and developed a high-performing team, including senior engineers in expanded roles and university hires beginning their engineering careers.
  • Drove talent growth through mentoring, role expansion, and career development for engineers from new graduates through principal engineers.
  • Built cross-division and external company partnerships to align engineering investments with shared product and business goals.
  • Developed engineering plans, cost estimates, and execution strategies to support new business opportunities and product priorities.
  • Guided the team through the transition to remote work during the COVID lockdown, establishing clear communication practices and collaborative operating rhythms.
  • Delivered remote Windows deployment and debugging technologies supporting Xbox handheld scenarios.
  • Delivered new profiling capabilities, including sampling memory profiler and capture comparison technologies.
  • Delivered Unity shared package support for PC and Xbox, streamlining cross-platform game development workflows.
  • Delivered Unreal support for targeting the Windows Gaming Store, reducing developer effort required to publish to the store.
  • Delivered Visual Studio 2022 support with new debugger integration for more effective Xbox console game debugging.
  • Delivered globalization strategy and execution for gaming tools, enabling Japanese-localized tooling.
  • Delivered ongoing performance improvements, feature enhancements, and quality fixes across owned developer tool areas.

Project Overview

A CPU performance profiler for games running on a major game console and Windows. Game developers have to find performance bottlenecks across huge volumes of timing data, and the existing tooling struggled to scale. Jamie was the technical lead. He architected the storage and caching layers in C++/C# with SQLite, and the profiler grew to handle over 1 billion events per hour and collect more than 1 million events per second. His team also added an “instant open” experience so large captures load quickly.

Responsibilities:
  • Served as technical team lead for CPU profiling tools for Xbox and Windows.
  • Established a strong test and verification culture.
  • Mentored developers and supported technical growth across the team.
  • Partnered with sibling graphics teams to deliver shared features and align developer tooling experiences.
  • Architected and led storage and caching layers that enabled timing captures to scale beyond 1 billion events per hour.
  • Developed detailed CPU performance profiling tools for PIX events, OS primitives, File IO, and Memory.
  • Led the team that implemented a system to collect over 1 million events per second, improving efficiency.
  • Designed "Instant" open functionality, making the tools more user-friendly and adaptable.

Project Overview

A platform abstraction layer for a major media/streaming company’s apps. It let one codebase run on Android, Xbox and PlayStation 4, so the team could ship to more devices without rewriting platform-specific code.

Responsibilities:
  • Worked with the team to deliver a platform abstraction layer for different devices.
  • Enabled Android continuous integration builds and supported improvements to the existing CI pipeline.
  • Developed and ported platform abstraction code to PlayStation 4 in partnership with the engineering team.

Project Overview

Core developer tooling and drivers for a next-gen game console. Jamie built the deployment and transport tech that lets developers stream game containers and run builds straight from a PC. He also worked with Wi-Fi vendors to bring the console’s wireless drivers to production.

Responsibilities:
  • Developed Xbox deployment technologies for streaming game containers and running game builds from a PC.
  • Built Xbox transport protocol and ported existing tools to the new transport.
  • Integrated SMB file share scenarios into the Xbox One OS and created a client-side shell extension for accessing game drives while titles ran.
  • Rewrote core TCP transport tools to optimize performance and reliability in console operations.
  • Led the development of Xbox console drivers and accessories, collaborating with WIFI vendors to enhance wireless driver features.

Project Overview

A database development extension for a major IDE. It lets developers build and manage databases declaratively, then deploy changes safely to live servers. Jamie was the technical lead. He designed the incremental T-SQL deployment engine and the model-based architecture behind drift detection and reverse engineering.

Responsibilities:
  • Served as technical lead for the development of SQL Server Data Tools.
  • Designed and implemented an incremental TSQL deployment engine for seamless updates.
  • Developed an in-place and online TSQL editing experience, improving user efficiency.
  • Developed a declaration-based database development platform hosted on live databases, driving requirements for drift detection, deployment, and incremental reverse-engineering technologies.
