Jared – React, Ruby, Typescript
Jared is a strong Senior Full-Stack Web Developer with a deep Ruby on Rails expertise and solid React/Next.js chops, known for taking full ownership of products end-to-end — including founding and running platforms solo for years at a time. He's led design-system and front-end architecture rebuilds for media and government clients, and currently maintains a widely-used open-source Ruby web framework. His engineering style favors sound architectural judgment and proven, maintainable solutions over chasing trends, backed by rare intellectual honesty about the edges of his own knowledge. A strong fit for remote, async-first teams, given his self-directed, distributed-team experience and clear communication.

Lead Maintainer / Senior Ruby Developer
Open-source hybrid static-and-dynamic web framework for Ruby developers, maintained by a distributed team and used in hundreds of production deployments worldwide. Combines conventional static-site generation with dynamic, Rails-like routing and components for modern web publishing.
- Forked Jekyll in 2020 and rebuilt its legacy Ruby internals into a modernized static-and-dynamic hybrid framework, removing the architectural bottlenecks that had been blocking new feature development.
- Shipped a backlog of highly-requested features that brought the framework in line with modern web development workflows and expectations.
- Integrated esbuild as the framework's JavaScript/CSS bundler, replacing slower legacy tooling with fast, native bundling available out of the box.
- Introduced web components as a first-class pattern in the framework, giving developers fast, browser-native UI/UX without requiring a heavy JS framework dependency.
- Designed and shipped Willamette, a customizable first-party theme, giving web publishers a production-ready starting point.
Software Architect / Ruby Developer
A platform for musicians & producers to upload custom presets for their favorite plugins. Users can sign up for free, create new preset banks, and upload their files & soundclips for the appropriate plugin formats.
- Partnered with long-time audio plugin & sample library company to build Preset Galaxy completely from scratch as a UCG platform for creators and downloaders;
- Worked closely with founder and third-party design firm to iterate on branding & style concepts during the early development phase;
- Used Ruby on Rails, Hotwire Turbo, and custom elements to build out full-stack architecture and develop full feature set;
- Set up backend automation to regenerate Zip files with readme text and presets ready to download whenever there's a relevant data change;
- Implemented a threaded comments section for each bank with voting & moderation functionality;
- Successfully launched platform to the public and maintained service with thousands of new user signups.
Front-End Developer
A user friendly platform for home seekers, housing staff and property managers. It is deployed for one or more local jurisdictions through public/private partnerships.
- Established front-end application architecture using Next.js, along with design patterns for how page layouts and complex multi-step forms should be structured;
- Identified that the existing Tailwind-based design system's per-file utility classes and JS theme config were blocking downstream deployments from applying their own branding;
- Led the initial engineering effort to build Seeds, a new design system built on web-native CSS theming, replacing the brittle utility-class approach with flexible, lightweight components;
- Partnered directly with the senior product designer throughout the rebuild, prioritizing UX and accessibility in every component decision.
Founder / Architect
A platform for designing and deploying touch-first, magazine-style websites.
- Identified tablet-first publishing as an emerging opportunity and founded a platform to capture it, designing and deploying touch-first, magazine-style websites from the ground up.
- Built a distinctive front-end architecture around sideways-scrolling and swipe gestures, giving publishers rich, magazine-style layouts and typography not otherwise available on tablet-first sites.
- Integrated direct access to cloud file storage such as Dropbox, streamlining the publishing workflow for content creators.
