Saif – React, Next.js, Typescript

Remote Year offers trips, experiences, and journeys around the world for one week up to a full year to people with remote jobs. Customers can find information about all the services and destinations worldwide. Besides, there are options to leave one's information, book a call, or directly secure a spot.

Saif worked on two applications such as remoteyear.com and booking.remoteyear.com. He coped with the following:

• Implemented a headless React/Next.js solution from scratch;
• Implemented Storybook component library;
• Brought about a new house style and design;
• Made sure the website ran fast and the search engine was friendly;
• Created data models in Contentful CMS;
• Implemented a new booking flow with Node.js in the back-end;
• Set up a good code base with code quality and testing tools and completed CI/CD setup;
• Set up a Scrum/Agile way of working;
• Created the whole website from scratch in just over a month;
• Implemented A/B testing with Google Optimize and set up A/B tests with a data analyst;
• Boosted in lead captures of about 250%;
• Gave a good estimation of the amount of work and ensured he hit the deadlines.

ThoughtWorks is one of the bigger software consultancy firms in the world. The focus is to help companies solve complex problems and develop features with a scrum/agile methodology. Via ThoughtWorks, Saif worked at two big clients, one in Spain and the other in Germany.

The main features Saif worked on were:

• flows to minimize support calls from customers during the pandemic;
• a spam detection tool to make sure registration is done by humans and prevent bots;
• a feature for customers to make a listing.

Saif managed the following tasks:

1. as for the large food delivery website:

• Implemented features/bug fixes in the Vue.js application;
• Carried out ‘self-service flow’ to reduce support calls (change address/phone number, change order details, give feedback to the courier);
• Implemented/edited endpoints in back-end Monolith (Java);

2. as for the giant real estate website:

• Performed roles of a Tech Lead and a Developer (50/50);
• Implemented features/bug fixes in React micro-front-end;
• Carried out features/bug fixes in Scala microservice;
• Implemented features/bug fixes in Node.js microservice;
• Brought about Imperva Bot Protection
• Carried out ‘coming soon listings’;
• Handled errors via Datadog.

SIM develops a SaaS for Dutch municipalities. The main SaaS had to correctly communicate with different microservices and API's. The main focus of Saif was building a brand-new SaaS that would replace the old one. This fresh solution had a headless React front-end, communicating via GraphQL to a Drupal back-end. The Drupal back-end was developed by an external company, and Saif and his team had to work very closely with it.

• Created new React/Drupal SaaS from scratch to replace an old one;
• Handled state management;
• Created CI/CD pipeline;
• Implemented React from scratch, picking the correct libraries to work with;
• Set up a local development environment;
• Implemented code quality tools such as linters and unit/e2e tests that would run locally and in the CI/CD pipelines.

StudentsPlus is a Dutch company that matches tutors with pupils. Students with teaching experience could sign up on the website to become tutors. On the other end, pupils could sign up on the website to get help in certain subjects. The task was to match these as well as possible.

• Managed migrating data from single table + Excel sheets to full relational MySQL database;
• Lead manual deployment via CLI to TransIP VPC;
• Handled state via cookies/local storage;
• Implemented a small quiz (studieomgeving);
• Created a front-end part where people could sign up with multiple roles;
• Made a back-end system that holds all this information;
• Created a back-end system for all employees in the company.
